Her Escape to FreedomMost of her life, Harriet was a slave. But she had a chance to freedom and took it. She was given a paper with instructions and was told to follow them. After that, she wound up in Philadelphia and came across a man named William Still the Philadelphia Stationmaster on the Underground Railroad. Still introduced the Underground Railroad to her and gave her the job as the conductor. In 1851 she began moving members of her family to St. Catharines in order to escape. The North Street in St. Catharines remained her base of operations until 1857. While there she worked at various activities to save and finance her activities as a conductor on the Underground Railroad.
